Description

MILTON, one of William Blake’s most important prophetic works, is a powerful statement of his vision of art and the artist within society. Blake uses the figure of the historical Milton to dramatize his artistic theories; in this process, the poet Milton is transformed into the poem Milton. John Milton is the exemplar of the spiritual pilgrim, who through his journey realizes and transcends human error to become the voice of prophecy. Blake speaks of the need to purify perception, so that the “dull round” of the senses may be transformed into the realm of “Imagination.”

The illustrations that accompany the text, reproduced in full color, are of exceptional beauty and intensity. Together, word and picture compose a multi-layered epic. Milton shows us the profound genius of William Blake, one of Britain’ s greatest poets and artists.

The copy of Milton that is used in this edition was printed by Blake in 1808-1809 and has never before been reproduced.
Additional plates from a later copy, printed in 1815, are also included.
